Honey Shield was born as a brand on the beach in Jeffreys Bay, South Africa, when two lifelong friends reunited after 20 years. This is the story of a unique product originating from organic roots.

In 2016 the inventor of Honey Shield was reunited by chance with an old school surf buddy at Jbay when on a surf trip. While surfing together, his friend noticed the sunscreen he was using and asked him about it. He was amazed by the unique qualities of the formula and suggested selling it commercially. Thus a partnership came about in the waves. The progression of Honey Shield has been very much a team effort. It is all about friends working together and having fun while doing so. We are also proud to say that all our current staff just happen to be surfers.

The founders of Honey Shield have spent most of their lives close to the ocean. Surfing, fishing, windsurfing, diving and kitesurfing have been integral parts of their lives. This lifestyle has caused them to tune closely with nature's rhythms of weather, tide and swell. Beekeeping and organic farming has been a natural progression of living close to nature.

One of the founders started his own kitesurfing school in 2006, spending 8 to 10 hours per day in direct sunlight. He used different sunscreens but nothing worked too well. He covered his lips with sunscreen but the taste was  bad. This led him to take a hard look at conventional ingredients. He realised that he was potentially covering his face with toxins on a daily basis.

Another irritation was that every time he went into the water his eyes would burn when the aptly called ‘water-resistant’ (not waterproof) sunscreen would come off, washing into his eyes.

He started looking for a healthy alternative but could find none. He opted to create his own product. The objective was to make a sunblock that was non-toxic and made from natural ingredients. Being a beekeeper, it was logical to look at honey and other bee products as ingredients.

It took a while to get the colour right. He would mix a batch and use it on himself while noting the reaction of his kitesurfing students. At one stage they called him The Abominal Snowman.

It took five years to perfect the formula.

The end product is closely matched to skin colour and does not wash off in the surf, is non-toxic, tastes fine and smells divine, does not burn the eyes, gives long lasting protection in and out of the water.

Honey Shield contains only good stuff. Honest, simple, natural ingredients like honey, beeswax and coconut oil. Nothing you have to wonder about. The only "active" (if you can even call it that) ingredient is non-nano zinc oxide powder. Zinc oxide has been mined in India and used in medicines for over 2500 years. After all that time it is still regarded as safe. All our products are hand mixed from only choice ingredients.

Another special quality of Honey Shield is that you can apply it on small cuts and grazes when you go into the water. Honey is a natural disinfectant and helps keep the baddies out. However, cleaning the wound properly before you apply Honey Shield is advised since you don't want to seal the bad stuff in.

One thing though: Honey Shield is classified as a 'Natural Remedy'. For this reason we are not allowed to make any claims or even call it a sunscreen. You will see there is no SPF figure on the product. This does not mean the product is not effective, it just means we are not allowed to state outright how well it works!

Try it and give us your opinion!

Yours Naturally ,
