Honey Shield was born as a brand in the waves of Jeffreys Bay, South Africa. The “inventor” of Honey Shield bumped into an old surf buddy from school days he had not seen for over 20 years. While “catching up” in the surf, his friend noticed the “Zinc” he was using on his face, and asked him about it. He was amazed by the unique qualities of the formula, and suggested selling it commercially.

The progression of Honey Shield from that point forward has been a joy and a team effort. It is all about friends working together; and having fun while doing so.

The Honey Shield team has spent most of their lives living close to the ocean. Surfing, kitesurfing, diving and fishing have been integral parts of their lives. This lifestyle has caused them to tune closely with the natural rhythms of tides, weather and swell.

Our “inventor” started his own kitesurfing school in 2006, spending 8 to 10 hours per day in strong sun. He tried different sunscreens, but nothing worked very well. When he covered his lips with sunscreen, the taste was terrible. Another irritation was that every time he went into the water, his eyes would burn when the sunscreen would come off and washed into his eyes. This was when he realised that he was potentially covering his face with toxins.

As a result, he took a hard look at conventional ingredients.

He started looking for a healthy alternative but, at the time, could find none. It was then that he decided to create his own “Zinc”, but from natural ingredients. Being a beekeeper, it was logical to consider honey and other bee products.

It took a while to get the colour just right. He would mix a batch and test it on himself while noting the reaction of his kitesurfing students. (At one stage they called him The Abominable Snowman- the product was white at that stage.)
It took five years and many mixes to perfect the formula, but it was well worth it.

The end product is closely matched to skin colour, does not wash off in the surf, does not burn your eyes, is non-toxic, tastes fine and smells divine.

Honey Shield contains only “good stuff.” Honest, simple, natural ingredients like honey, beeswax and coconut oil. Nothing you have to wonder about.

The only ingredient it contains with proven sun blocking properties is non-nano zinc oxide powder. It is a physical blocker and not a chemical one. Zinc oxide has been mined in India and used in medicines for over 2500 years. It is recognised as safe by the FDA, and used in food.

Another special quality of Honey Shield is that you can apply it on small cuts and grazes before you go into the water. Honey is a natural disinfectant and helps keep the baddies out. However, cleaning the wound properly before you apply Honey Shield is advised, since you don't want to seal the bad stuff in.
